Many of you will know Dr Stephen Nelson. As the longest serving consultant Nephrologist on the team, he has helped thousands of patient with renal disease. At the end of this month, Dr Nelson will retire after 40 years of service to the NHS. About Dr Nelson

Dr Nelson has given 40 years of service to the NHS as a medical student, registrar and consultant. As a renal physician he has helped thousands of people with renal problems face the challenges that a chronic disease or injury causes. He qualified from Leeds Medical School in 1982 and became a renal registrar at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in 1990. Over the subsequent years he practiced renal medicine at Kings College Hospital (Dulwich) and St Helier Hospital before a brief period at St George's in 1993. He was appointed as a consultant Nephrologist at Dulwich in 1994 before returning to St George's in 1996. During almost 25 years at St George's has was a consultant nephrologist, the renal unit care leader for 8 years and the Clinical Director in renal medicine and surgery, clinical haematology, oncology and palliative care for 11 years.

If you have been a patient (or a patient relative) of his, you will know how much time and care he has provided to his patients. Always giving them time to voice their worries and concerns. Extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful, Dr Nelson dealt with medical challenges with a patient, calm and confident manner.
